You might have read or heard experts say breakfast is the day’s most important meal. Whether this is true or not is up for debate. One thing that is not up for debate is that most individuals in this country have very set thoughts on what constitutes breakfast food. Let’s go through a few Red, White, and Blue breakfast staples:
LIST ONE (adults)
- Bacon
- Eggs
- Sausage
- Cheese
- Highly processed bread toasted with refined sugar-laden toppings and/or butter
- Some ultra-processed grain that is milled/dehydrated and altered to the point of being a small flake, sometimes brightly colored, or many times a brownish yellow, also commonly known as cereal.
- Milk and milk by-products
- Pancakes, corn cakes, or anything in the cake family
- Highly processed eggo waffles or other items in the waffle family
- Scones
- Giant muffins
- Super high-calorie chemical/refined sugar-laden coffee drinks
OK, did I get it all…. and this list is just what most adults eat… Adding the children’s menu opens up an additional Pandora’s box of ultra-processed creations that the food industry has concocted to keep our children hooked for life.
LIST TWO (children)
- Chocolate chip bagels
- Captain crunch
- Juice boxes with refined sugar
- Anything in the puff family, which include:
- Reeses puffs
- CoCo Puffs
- Kix (kid-tested and parent-approved… of course)
- Golden puffs
- Panda puffs
- Doughnuts
- Giant kid muffins (similar to the adult variety)
So who are those we refer to as “THEY” who don’t want you to know the secret I will share with you in a moment about your breakfast? Two of the first ones were Charles W. Post and John Harvey Kellogg. You have probably heard about these two rascals who are the founders and financial masterminds behind the USA cereal industry, with the Kellog cereal family worth 21.06 Billion as of October 15, 2021.
I am sure their initial intent was not malicious in creating a highly processed chemical and refined sugar-laden product that would become the mainstay of our breakfast tables. I will tell you “THEY” sure know now that this type of food is one of the worst things you can eat for breakfast.
OK…. Now for the forgotten secret about breakfast…. are you ready?
ALRIGHT, here I go….
There is no FIRM RULE that you as a human being have to eat any one or combination of the items on the two lists above for breakfast!!!
BOOM, THERE IT IS…..You can also pick from this third list below…. and I know some of the foods on this list are NOT BREAKFAST FOODS!!! Please trust me; you will not spontaneously catch fire if you eat one of the following for breakfast:
LIST THREE (alternate secret breakfast list)
- Anything in the berry family (straw-blue-black-Rasp)
- Nuts and seeds (flax, almonds, walnuts, pistachios, etc.) or nut butter without added sugar
- Unprocessed or minimally processed grains like; oatmeal, Grape-Nuts, and whole-grain bread products
- Quality-sourced meats and dairy (whatever that means to you)
- An orange or other fruit you can identify as real food – such as an apple, a kiwi, a banana, etc.
- Pastured egg omelet with veggies and no cheese…. I promise it will still taste good without the cheese.
- OK, here is the craziest one YOU CAN HAVE A SALAD FOR BREAKFAST (The surgeon general recently removed the binding regulation passed in 1922 that no salad should ever touch your lips before noon)
- Here is another weird one…. You can have steamed or grilled veggies as part of your breakfast. (mind-blowing!!)
OK, I guess I am saying…fill your plate and the plates of those you love with as much good as possible to crowd out the bad for the meal people call the most important meal of the day.
